Design Inspiration
The original Doom is super famous for having so many mods—like, I’m pretty sure there’s even a magic mod out there with all kinds of different versions.
I was really excited to turn this classic shooter into a randomly generated, maze-like magical world. To me, this project felt like the perfect chance to jump into game design and learn more about it.
Game Flow
The game follows a traditional process, using a level-based progression system. If you fail a level, you can choose to replay the current level or exit directly. After successfully clearing a level, you will proceed to the next one until you complete the entire game.
Weapon UI
In UI design, weapons are a rather special element. Following the design style of Doom, weapons are presented in 2D form, drawn directly on the screen like textures. I referenced this design idea and made the weapon directly part of the UI. Of course, this is a relatively simple approach because it's also possible to place the weapon as a 3D game object in front of the camera, but I ultimately chose this more convenient implementation method.
The images of the weapon's hand were downloaded from the internet, modified by myself, and then made into animations in Unity.
UI & Death Screen
This is the complete UI design and death screen.
Level Generation
All levels are composed of randomly generated buildings, and all content unfolds within a huge box. Therefore, players will not fall in places without walls, because the edges of the area must be blocked by walls.
Collectible Items
There are not many types of collectible items, with a total of 3. Among them, health portion and revive portion are optional items, while door key is a necessity to pass the level. After the player gets the key, a portal will appear, which means the player needs to find the location of the portal.
Control Scheme
The default setting is that the left hand is used to control movement, and the right hand is used to control the perspective. Both are marked with star-shaped patterns.
Development Testing
During development testing, the game has attacking enemies, picking up items, taking melee damage, and dying when health is too low.
